Prior to joining BDC Advisors, Dick's most recent role was as Senior Vice President of Business Development for Ovations, the UnitedHealth Group business segment focused upon the health and well-being needs of Americans aged 50 and over. In this role, he led Ovations' increased focus upon growth strategies and acquisition opportunities. This concentrated on new business opportunities for health services needed to assist long term care and terminally ill individuals and their families, including palliative and end-of-life care.
Also in UnitedHealth Group, Dick was Senior Vice President of Network Development for UnitedHealthcare where he simultaneously held the role of CEO for the Pacific Region and Extended Market Areas which served over two million members. For six years prior to joining UnitedHealthcare, Dick was with Catholic Health Initiatives (Denver) where he was Senior Vice President and Market Service Executive for Centura Health, and Chief Operating Officer for its Southern Colorado division. Prior to that, Dick served as the Senior Vice President of Physician Integration for Centura Health and the Chief Executive Officer for the physician practice management division. He had been CEO of Total Healthcare, the management services organization of the Penrose-St. Francis Health System, a member of Centura Health.
For nearly ten years Dick held senior management positions with HCA as Vice President of Development and as Vice President of Marketing. During this decade, he was instrumental in helping HCA grow from fewer than 25 hospitals to over 200 hospitals with over 20,000 beds. Dick was also one of the early members of the management team for PhyCor, a Nashville-based company focusing on physician practice management of multi-specialty clinics, serving as Vice President for Development. Prior to PhyCor, Dick was President and CEO of VisionAmerica, a start-up company whose business was ophthalmic practice management. He grew VisionAmerica into multiple new states, eventually merging with another similar company which subsequently had an Initial Public Offering of stock. Dick began his career with Hamilton / KSA and consulted with dozens of acute care hospitals, hospital management companies, and health service agencies in nearly 25 states over a five-year timeframe.
Dick holds a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC and an MBA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He has served on the boards of acute care hospitals and physician practice management services organizations along with several community-based agencies. Dick is also engaged, pro bono, as an international business consultant in micro-economic development activities in several Latin America countries.
