Dick is a Senior Advisor at BDC Advisors and has over 25 years of experience as a senior level executive of healthcare delivery systems and healthcare consulting organizations, both domestically and internationally.
Specific areas of specialization are:
Dick specializes in care delivery system strategy, finance and operations, turnarounds, the development of new healthcare companies, and in the development and implementation of major healthcare strategic ventures in existing companies. He has operated care delivery systems, overseen system formation and growth, and led efforts to develop market strategies.
Dick served for five years as the Director of Hospitals for the Aga Khan Health Service, overseeing ten hospitals in Central Asia and East Africa. A major focus was the implementation of programs modeled after western-quality services. He also participated in the formation of a post graduate medical education program in Kenya modeled after the Harvard University structure as the first step in the development of a full medical school.
Project management of large-scale, complex situations for healthcare delivery systems is one of his areas of expertise. Dick built a 700-physician network through affiliations and acquisitions for a major academic medical center in New England. Additionally he successfully implemented the build out of a hospital imaging service through the acquisition of an MRI service despite the history of a hostile relationship between buyer and seller.
Prior to consulting, Dick served as the President and CEO of a 500-bed tertiary care hospital in Southern California, which he transformed into a multidimensional integrated delivery system and merged into a regional system. He was recognized as one of the “Top 25 Turnaround Executives in American Health Care” by HealthWeek. Richard also served as a Senior Vice President of Amherst Associates, a national healthcare consulting and computer services firm later acquired by HBO.
Dick received undergraduate and graduate degrees in business from the University of Illinois. He began his career as a practicing CPA. He has served on numerous boards and is a frequent speaker on contemporary business issues.
